So berichtet er auf den frühen Seiten sehr allgemein, fast dröge und praktisch ohne einzelne Akteure von der Machtpolitik der Staaten, der Bedeutung des Gewürzhandels und vom Stand der Kartographie im 15. und beginnenden 16. Jahrhundert.Später – gerade, als Magellans Flotte nach langem Hin und Her endlich lossegelt – schiebt Bergreen geschlagene zwölf Seiten über historische Aberglauben ein. Interessanter und kürzer sind Abhandlungen über die Sozialstruktur an Deck, über Kleidung und Essen der Seefahrer, über die furchterregenden Außenbordtoiletten, aber auch über Geografie, die chinesische Schatzflotte seit 1405 und Shakespeares Magellan-Rezeption. Mitunter liefert Bergreen lyrische Naturbeschreibungen, besonders auffällig in der Magellanstraße, die er, wie andere Schauplätze, selbst besucht und fotografiert hat.Vom versprochenen "sex" erzählt Bergreen nicht so viel. Bergreen führt mehr Quellen an als andere Magellan-Biografen, die ich gelesen habe. Er verweist auf Anmerkungen jedoch nicht durch Sternchen oder hochgestellte Ziffern im Text – man muss hinten auf gut Glück nach einer Anmerkung suchen, die dort wiederum ohne Verweis auf eine Seitenzahl im Haupttext erscheint. Das ist etwas unübersichtlich, und Bergreen bringt im Anhang viele, ausführliche Anmerkungen – nicht nur Quellenhinweise, sondern auch Hintergrundinformationen zur Handlung, die man gern liest. Man sollte dort ein zweites Lesezeichen einstecken (am besten ein klappbar einhängbares, das nicht herausrutscht).

Gute Englischkenntnisse sind allerdings sehr von Vorteil.
