Pat Thomas has appeared on the BBC & NPR as the author of Listen, Whitey! -- he was a consultant to the PBS documentary The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution. He has lectured at USC, Evergreen State and the Universities of Copenhagen, Oslo & East London. He curated the book Invitation To Openness: The Jazz & Soul Photography of Les McCann 1960-1980 and compiled an Allen Ginsberg box set: The Last Word on First Blues. He lives in California.

This is an excellent book. During his high school years, Jerry was honing his skills writing provocative articles which were printed in the Cincinnati newspapers. Later, he did outrageous things that were published worldwide. This gained attention from the readers who then were interested in following his various causes.

Author, musician, and editor, Pat Thomas is slowly but surely becoming the counter and popular culture guru of our day. Every project he touches is fascinating and presented in appealing formats. --- This book is about Jerry Rubin as a human and the hippie / yippie revolution - a story i lived through and followed. Well written, exhaustively researched and profusely illustrated. This is a fun book to read and shows a depth of understanding and an admiration for the subject and historical period. essential for students of the 1960s.
Well, it's a coffee table book. This means it's really huge. It has lots of photos and digital scans. It is by no means the definitive biography on the man Jerry Clyde Rubin. It is, however, keeping in mind that until this book's arrival no biographies about Jerry existed, a good biography about the Yippie & Yuppie aspects of Jerry's life. And that's exactly as it has been advertised and sold. I enjoyed reading the book and looking at the pictures but after finishing it I was still quite hungry. Hopefully the biographer will be driven some day to write a proper, thorough biography of at least 500 pages of text. This book is a curious novelty, an interesting gimmick, but it is also stupidly oversized. Where the hell are you gonna keep it? On the coffee table? Sure, if you live in a museum free of kids, cats, and dogs. I reckon I'm gonna frame the cover and place the book in the attic. If nothing else, this 1st edition hardcover will eventually be a collector's item. And don't get me wrong, I am glad it exists, but I am a serious fan of seriously thorough biographies, and this just doesn't qualify as one of those. Jerry Clyde Rubin deserves more than just a gimmick for a biography.
Pat Thomas breaks the boundaries of biography with this remarkably well-written and imaginatively designed book about a boundary-breaker if there ever was one. Full-disclosure: I'm quoted several times in the book, as I knew Rubin and was involved in many of the same activities of the last half of the 1960s. But that's because I trusted Thomas to tell the story in a way that communicated the human drama as well as the socio-political drama, the way a rock n' roller would tell it, as opposed to a dry academic. In fact, as a journalist I can only say that Thomas has written the book about the 1960s that I would have written--only better! Don't steal this book--buy it (for the hell of it. Do it it (now!).
